It is often said that when one teaches, two learn. This simple statement reflects the attitude that I try to carry into the classroom each day. To be true to the spirit of teaching and learning, one must recognize the reciprocal relationship that exist between the student and the teacher. Each day we are teaching our students and each day we are learning from them as well. This is the greatest reward I find in teaching. While I am responsible for facilitating the learning that is occurring in the classroom, I must acknowledge the fact that the learner is a co-creator in this process too.  Acknowledgment can be defined as the action of expressing or displaying gratitude or appreciation for something.  Students need to know that each of us come into this world with something unique to offer. These gifts are meant to be nurtured and shared with each other. It is in the sharing of our gifts that we make ourselves and each other better. A teacher who acknowledges and promotes this type of learning environment creates better students in the classroom and ultimately better students of life.  We know as adults we thrive in an atmosphere that fosters a sense of community; a place that honors each individual’s contribution and growth within an organization. This type of validation is a basic human need we all require, as it helps to scaffold many other qualities that are essential for future success and development.  If I am part of a group that supports and values me, then I feel secure enough to take a risk that enables me to grow and learn to my fullest potential. This is true of all individuals.  Yes, children do want the same things that we want!
